AUDITIONS:

June 2, 3, & 4
Play Ball a.k.a Chicago

By: Maurine Dallas Watkins

Directed by: John Elliott

If you liked the 2002 musical, you'll love the play that started it all:
Newspaper reporter Maurine Watkins' wicked satire of crime and corruption
in flapper-era Chicago. When Roxie Hart is charged with a crime of passion,
it triggers a hilarious send-up of the police, the press, and big-city
crime and punishment.

Cast of Characters:

Roxie Hart (20s). Our heroine, the most beautiful woman ever charged with
murder in Cook County
Jake (middle 20s). Cynical, rough-and-ready newspaper reporter
Billy Flynn (40s-50s) counsel for the defense. A little man, like Napoleon,
and he carries himself with the Corporal's air
Mary Sunshine (ageless) sob sister for The Evening Star; talks with a
slightly affected lisp and boundless enthusiasm
Amos Hart (mid-30s), Roxie's long-suffering yet supportive husband
Babe, 20s, a news photographer, another rough and ready young man, with
ingratiating smile and steady flow of words
* Mrs. Morton (50s) matron at the Women's Ward of the Cook County Jail
* Martin S. Harrison, (mid-20s), Assistant State's Attorney; a tall eager
young man, nervous manner bursting with suppressed excitement
* Liz (40s), an older murderess
* Velma Kelly (late 30s), an older murderess
* Charles E. Murdock (50s) a police sergeant
* Moonshine Maggie (mid-30s) another murderess
* Fred Casely (perhaps 30), Roxie's soon-to-be ex-lover; no lines
* Go-to-Hell Kitty (late teens-early 20s), a young murderess

* These actors will also play photographers, reporters, people of the court,
bailiffs, policemen and other background figures.
Who plays which of these characters will be determined after casting.

Twenties: Chicago (film musical, 2002), the Broadway musical (1975),
the Ginger Rogers film Roxie Hart (1942), and a silent film version (1927).
If you think the American justice system is corrupt now, wait until

Dallas Watkins' Chicago (1926).
