Hi All,

Good to see you all again. Below are the links related to the information that we discussed this morning at Menucha. Please let me know if you have comments or questions. Enjoy the rest of the weekend retreat and safe travels home.

1. Next Generation Science Standards<http://www.nextgenscience.org/> (NGSS)

* National Research Council's 2011 Framework for K-12 Science Education<http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=13165> is the source document upon which the NGSS will be based.

* The NSTA Readers Guide to A Framework for K-12 Science Education<http://teachscience4all.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/free-nsta-readers-guide-to-the-framework-for-k-12-science-education/> is intended for many audiences-including science teachers, science supervisors, curriculum developers, administrators, and other stakeholders in science education-to help them better understand and effectively implement the new standards when they are released.

* Oregon is a Lead State<http://www.ode.state.or.us/news/announcements/announcement.aspx?id=7842&typeid=5> in this work. The next Lead State review of the full set of NGSS will be in first two weeks of February

* First public review of the full set of NGSS is scheduled for early April (I have emailed Achieve to ask how long the feedback period will be.)

* I will send more information about the process for the public feedback as soon as I receive it.
2. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Education

* ODE STEM webpage<http://www.ode.state.or.us/search/results/?id=382> contains the Oregon STEM Education Initiative Framework<http://www.ode.state.or.us/wma/stem/stem-education-initiative-draft-for-public-review-11-3-11-.pdf> and more information about this work is coming soon.

* The Portland Region Oregon STEM Education Partnership<http://www.pdxstem.org/> is moving forward with their work to develop a STEM Education Partnership to measurably increase the college and career readiness of K-12 students by engaging schools in collective impact partnerships that employ a networked improvement community to transform the learning and teaching of science engineering, and mathematics (STEM). They are working on a business plan and will have a conference in April to continue moving forward with their planning.
3. Common Core State Standards (CCSS)

* These K-12 standards for math<http://www.ode.state.or.us/teachlearn/real/newspaper/Newspaper_Section.aspx?subjectcd=MA> and for ELA and Literacy in Science, Social Science, and Technical Subjects<http://www.ode.state.or.us/teachlearn/real/newspaper/newspaper_section.aspx?subjectcd=ELA> were adopted by Oregon in October of 2010, and should be fully implemented for all grades by the 2013-14 school year, so that students are prepared for the SMARTER Balanced Assessment<http://www.ode.state.or.us/search/page/?id=3298> (SBAC) in the spring of 2014-15. The SMARTER assessment will test the CCSS and replace the OAKS for those content areas.

* ODE CCSS webpage<http://www.ode.state.or.us/search/page/?id=2860> contains that standards and resources to support implementation. The information is arranged by stakeholder group and includes a CCSS Toolkit<http://www.ode.state.or.us/search/page/?id=3430> to provide guidance and resources to aid implementation.
4. ESEA Waiver<http://www.ode.state.or.us/search/page/?id=3475>

* In recent months, states around the country, including Oregon, have taken the lead in calling for changes to this law. In September, President Obama announced that states would have the opportunity to request flexibility from specific mandates while maintaining a strong commitment to accountability and high standards for all students.
5. National Youth Science Camp<http://www.ode.state.or.us/news/announcements/announcement.aspx?ID=7925&TypeID=4>

* The National Youth Science Camp (NYSC), hosted and sponsored by the National Youth Science Foundation<http://www.nysc.org/>, is an intense all expenses paid three-week camp (June 27-July 21, 2012) that honors and challenges two graduating high school students from each state.

* To apply, students must download the application packet from http://2012.nysc.org/delegates/apply/ and follow the enclosed instructions. Applications must be received by Cheryl Kleckner at the Oregon Department of Education no later than February 17, 2012.
6. Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

* The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) are the Nation's highest honors for teachers of mathematics and
science. The online nomination period for Elementary Mathematics and Science Teachers (K‐6) is now open. Please visit www.paemst.org/<http://www.paemst.org/> for more information and to nominate outstanding teachers.

* We have a mentoring program available to all Oregon nominees through a national network of previous Awardees. Nominate teachers now, so they may access this mentoring program as soon as possible.

Thank you all for all you do every day for Oregon students!

Best regards,

Cheryl Kleckner
