Dear Ms. Shannon:

Thanksgiving Day an educator friend from Hood River found on her cell-phone that you may be the specific person to contact about my project. So I'm forward my email to the OSTA general address to you.

Subject: Oregon's Botanical Landscape

Please forward to the Curriculum Department of the Oregon Science Teachers Association:

For the past 26 years I have painted native plants en plein aire in their native Oregon habitats. In May 2011 I exhibited 72 paintings organized by the state's eight ecoregions in the Moreland Gallery at the Benton County Historical Museum entitled Oregon's Botanical :Landscape: An Opportunity to Imagine Oregon Before 1800. See the eight minute video of the exhibition below.

The Benton County Cultural Coalition awarded me a grant to print books based on the exhibition for all the schools and libraries in Benton County. Short texts accompanying each painting include scientific, artistic, and cultural information. Habitat information and distribution maps are also included. The formatted manuscript-in-progress has been endorsed by Dr E O Wilson from Harvard University and Dr Fred Swanson geologist from the US Forest Service. Four Benton County educators have reviewed the manuscript and are eager to get the book into their classrooms.

I would like the book to be available to schools in all the counties in the state. Would the Oregon State Teachers' Association be interested in shepherding the book into schools, libraries or classrooms in the other 35 counties? I will be glad to send excerpts of the manuscript to you.

The book is dedicated "To the next generation and the next; may you always have a sense of home." I use the subjects of science and the ways of art to create in the participant viewer's imagination a sense of the volume of air above the land we call Oregon.

I appreciate your interest in my project.

Sincerely,

Frances Stilwell
