This is a friendly reminder that there is a Board Training and Meeting on Saturday, October 13th after the conference. Here is the agenda, Please do look over the schedule and peruse the linked documents. Our goal is to be able to advance the meeting by approving the consent agenda. The training starts at 10am, the board meeting will begin at noon. Lunch will be served. As one of the only two required face-to-face meetings of the year, you will be reimbursed for mileage and one nights? lodging (up to $99) for your attendance at the meeting. Expense reimbursement forms are at the bottom of the agenda. The elections will wrap up on Monday, and our new 2018-19 Board members will be set. In order to have an accurate record of this board for our board web page, we will be asking you to submit your contact information as well as your intentions on attending the board training and meeting on Saturday, October 13th on this google form. Please fill out the google form immediately. There is important information that is needed for organizing the meeting next week. Please do not delay. National Geographic reached out to us because they are organizing a screening tour for their new film, Science Fair. I thought this could be a fun opportunity to organize a regional event if any of you are interested. The stipulation is that we cannot charge or accept donations at the screening, so it seems like the key would be finding a free or inexpensive location to host the event (like at school - and it looks like a film students might be interested in, too). If any of you are interested, you can fill out this Google form to find out more: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf284NSZpim2NoQKee24ehOpsAWi84bGft9rNshb7MnugLLCA/viewform The form includes a link to view the film trailer. I think I'm just riding the conference high and trying out some ideas right now :) I'd love your feedback on a new tool I'm working on for our website: an interactive Google map . I created our regions by color coding Oregon counties (thank you Angie for your brilliant idea to do this so I wouldn't have to draw our regions by hand!). I added points for each executive team and board member based on work locations. My goal here was to make it easy for members to find their nearest representative. *Question: *Does using the map this way bring up any privacy concerns? Instead of work locations, I could put in the county or city for something less specific (everyone's school sites are listed on the website already, fyi). I'm very hopeful that Google will one day allow syncing the maps with a calendar, so that events can be viewed by location. Of course I could add them all one by one, and then delete them, but that doesn't seem like the best use of my time. Something to check on in the future... Next steps: Angie suggested adding locations for field trips, science museums and other science education resources around the state. If any of you are interested in helping with that, I can give you editing access. Thanks all! -Leah -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Andy had brought up a similar idea of hosting NGSS chats as part of our Marketing and Rebranding committee work. So, we're taking this idea and running with it! Here is our current working document describing the webcast format and possible topics. One thing to note: we are proposing that these aren't structured quite as much as a workshop would be, but rather as conversations where teacher participant voices are encouraged. *The rationale:* Science teachers in many parts of Oregon are not often afforded spaces to collaborate, learn and process their practice as they transition to the NGSS. We hope that these free webcasts can provide a space where teachers can feel supported in their work, gain inspiration, and learn about topics of need from their colleagues and invited guests. We are suggesting making the webcasts open to all, whether they are a member or not, but charging a nominal fee ($5 or $10) for non-members who would like a PDU certificate, since it will take time for me to create those. We welcome OSTA Board feedback on this plan. Andy and I plan to bring the Webcast proposal to tomorrow's Oregon Science Leaders meeting in order to gauge what topics would be most relevant and helpful for teachers, and dates and times of the week that might be most accessible. If you're not coming to the meeting tomorrow, please feel free to chime in with your feedback by responding to this email or adding comments to the proposal. Andy and I are committed to getting this project off the ground by scheduling and hosting the first two webcasts. After that, we plan to share feedback on how it went, and solicit other board members to take turns hosting. Please respond with any feedback you have to this plan! Thanks for making time to read all the way to the bottom. You are all so appreciated. Happy Halloween, -Leah -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
