In this edition:

** A Man Who Says 'Aarrr!' in the Face of Death

** Join Me Saturday as Pirates and Art Come Together

Join me Saturday afternoon at the Shinola Art Gallery and Boutique, 1813 Martin Luther King Blvd., in the Central City areas of New Orleans (Get it? It's in New Orleans, which is known as NOLA, so Shinola.)

It's an all-day event, 1 to 10 p.m. There'll be readings and activities for youngsters, and from 4 to 5:30 I will be one of three authors reading and talking about our books. I'll be the only pirate on the schedule. I'll be in full gear, reading from both "Chrissie Warren: Pirate Hunter: And "A Li'l' Pirate's ABSeas." Mad Sally will be with me to watch my back, take pix, and remind me of things I've forgotten (a fulltime job, I assure you.) We could use plenty of buccaneer backup.

Shinola, which opened earlier this month, is part gallery, part community art venue. It's a cool place. You can find out more about it here:

** A Man Who Says 'Aarrr!' in the Face of Death

Craig Bryden, the Pompey Pirate of Pompey, England, is in the news again. He's the Royal Navy veteran diagnosed with incurable lung cancer who decided not to spend his time feeling sorry for himself and railing about how unfair life is. Instead, he dresses like a pirate for his chemotherapy sessions to bring a smile to others and spread a little light in a dark place.

Last weekend he was invited to carry the team banner for Pompey's football club in their big match with Plymouth. While Pompey lost the match, the day was a big hit for Craig, who was showered with love and support from the fans. "Walking out at Fratton Park was the first time I have felt sheer happiness since my diagnosis," he said.

You can read about Craig's story here:

And about his day at the soccer stadium here:

(By the way – HMS Sheffield, on which Craig served, was the British cruiser sunk by an Argentine missile in the Falkland Wars. While the crew was being evacuated, they sang the Monty Python song, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life." So it's easy to see where Craig got his positive outlook.)
