Issue No. 137 ? www.talklikeapirate.com ? www.facebook.com/InternationalTalkLikeAPirateDay ? baurlife.com/ ---------------------------------------- ONE WEEK Until International Talk Like a Pirate Day! In this issue: ** Cedar Key Strong ** Our Plans/Your Plans --------------------------------------- *** Cedar Key Strong I want to take a moment to talk about our mates in Cedar Key, Florida, as brave a crew of buccaneers as I know. Cedar Key was front and center earlier this month when Hurricane Hermine stormed ashore, and the little town on the gulf coast took it on the chin ? but they came up grinning and thumbing their noses at the storm! Residents have been out cleaning up, rebuilding and getting ready for an invasion of pirates Sept. 16-18. They're not just hoping the festival will go on ? They INSIST on it! And Ol' Chumbucket and Mad Sally will be there for the Cedar Key Pirate Festival! http://cedarkeypiratefest.com/ https://www.facebook.com/CedarKeyPirateInvasion/?fref=ts If you want to help out this crew of plucky pirates, you can send donations to the City of Cedar Key or the Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce, and they'll know who is in need and how to spend the money. Just mark "Hermine Relief" on the memo line of yer check and mail it to either: Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 610, Cedar Key, Florida, 32625; or City of Cedar Key, P.O. Box 339, Cedar Key, Florida, 32625. -------------------------------------------------- *** Our Plans/Your Plans Here it comes! International Talk Like a Pirate Day will be here in 8 days and we're making piratey plans. What are yours? On Saturday, Sept. 17, Cap?n Slappy?ll be in Portland for the legendary TLAPDay party of Cockroach Blair and his good woman Mercy. On the holiday itself ? Monday, Sept 19 ? Slappy and Jezebel the Web Wench will hold court from 5 to 7 p.m. at their favorite watering hole, the Calapooia Brew Pub, 140 NE Hill St., Albany, Oregon. http://calapooiabrewing.com And as we said, Ol' Chumbucket and Mad Sally will be in Florida for the Cedar Key Pirate Festival, carousing with the crew and promoting "Chrissie Warren: Pirate Hunter." https://baurlife.com/chrissie-warren-pirate-hunter/ So you might say that between us we've got the U.S. covered from corner to corner! On Talk Like A Pirate Day, residents are, as the name suggests, encouraged to dress up and talk like a pirate. Awareness and funds are raised for children affected by childhood cancers and leukemia. In this issue: ** Ol' Chumbucket Reading "Chrissie" on TLAPDay ** Talk Like a Pirate Day in Tokyo ** Raffle in St. Augustine ** Gettin' Yer Electronics to Growl ** Freebooter Fashion --------------------------------------- ** Ol' Chumbucket Reading from Chrissie on TLAPDay If you're in the New Orleans area or anywhere close at 6 p.m. Monday ? Talk Like a Pirate Day ? come join me at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore, 3721 Veterans Blvd., Metairie, for some fun. I'm going to read from my novel, "Chrissie Warren: Pirate Hunter," and I'll take part in some other activities, including reading one of my favorite kid's books ? Melinda Long's "How I Became a Pirate," with those great illustrations by David Shannon. It's free and open to the public. It'll be a fun way to cap this yer's Talk Like a Pirate Day celebration and we hope to see you there. If you're in the area ? and I mean within, say, eight hours drive, it'll be THAT good ? come on out for the fun! https://baurlife.com/chrissie-warren-pirate-hunter/ ---------------------------------------- ** Talking Like a Pirate in Tokyo This is ? different. Got a message from a group calling itself "Japan's leading pirates ? Smile Pirates!" They wanted to get in on the fun of Talk Like a Pirate Day. We're not sure what to make of this, but we're pretty sure you'll enjoy the novelty of this short video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUtyi7Eo-3o ---------------------------------------- ** Raffle in St. Augustine The St. Augustine Swashbucklers in Florida are holding a Talk Like a Pirate Day raffle that includes some fabulous swag, including a two-gallon barrel with a spigot. I want it! (And you can buy tickets via email.) They've got events slated for the whole weekend, including a treasure hunt throughout downtown St. Augustine, a screening of "The Goonies"and much more. You can find out about it at www.facebook.com/groups/thestaugustineswashbucklers. All proceeds will fund Hurricane Hermine relief. ---------------------------------------- ** Gettin' yer electronics to growl You probably know all about how you can set your Facebook settings to display everything in what the FB overlords think is pirate. (If you don't, it's in "Settings." You'll figure it out.) Now you can get the same sass when you check the weather. The folks who brought you the iPhone app, "Weather or Not," have a 99-cent pirate-theme you can download. "Weather or Not" takes all that meteorological mumbo jumbo and distills it down to a simple message in big block text. "Tomorrow will be more rainy than today" or "Tomorrow will be cooler than today." With the pirate theme, it says "Tomorrow be more rainy than today" over a skull and crossbones backdrop. And of course there are plenty of other apps for turning a quick pirate phrase, or playin' a piratey game, or learning bits of buccaneer lore. It's all online at your favorite app store. ---------------------------------------- ** Freebooter Fashion There's a pirate fashion show on the books for TLAPDay weekend. Head out to the Crab Shack on Tybee Island in Georgia from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. The event features live models and authentic pirate-themed items from The Pirate Store and Anastasia Designs from Florida. No tickets are required for entry and a cash bar and dining are available as well. Whether you're planning to go to the Tybee Island Pirate Fest Oct. 6-9, or any other buccaneer bash in the coming year, or just like swashing your buckle, this is your chance to find some fashion with a freebooter flavor. https://tybeeisland.com/arts-entertainment/guide-pirate-fest/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Pirate Festival has been great, and the people of this tiny, storm-tossed town even greater. My heart is full and my schedule tight. I'll have more to say later this week, right now we're packing up, then heading over to the festival grounds for one more visit before we hit the road for the drive home. But I want to say thanks to all our new friends and wish 'em well. ********************** Ol' Chumbucket, editor -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
