A lot of our pirate friends were int eh path of Hurricane Florence and now are faced with a monumental cleanup when the waters eventually subside. Our thoughts are with you! In this issue: ** Ol' Chumbucket Reading in Covington, LA ** Slappy and Cider in Eugene, OR ** Also Coming Up for the Holiday ?????? ?? Join Me In Covington! Come join me Wednesday ? International Talk Like a Pirate ? for an evening of pirate hijinks! I'll be at the 2nd & Charles Bookstore in Covington, LA, at 6 p.m. I'll read, sing, do a bit of pirate schtick, and whatever else I can to draw and amuse a crowd. I'll read from my YA pirate adventure novel, "Chrissie Warren" Pirate Hunter." Readers have said: ? "Just finished Chrissie Warren! Wow what a journey! I laughed, I cried, and I can?t say I could enjoy anything more. This has to be among the top in my favorite pirate books." ? Janine Myers ? "Could not put it down. ? Michelle Montanaro, Ratanne of Blackbeard?s Crew" ? "This book hooked me when I read it and just pulled me along." ? Leslie Hogan 2nd & Charles surprised me when I dropped by there. It's much bigger than I expected, and a wonderfully eclectic place. It's a great place for a fun evening of freebooter frivolity. Hope to see you there. If you can't make it, you can always order "Chrissie Warren" Pirate Hunter" at https://www.amazon.com/Chrissie-Warren-Pirate-John-Baur/dp/0692459049, and all the other online outlets for paper and ebooks. ** Slappy and Cider ? Cap'n Slappy will hold court at Ciderlicious, 2760 Friendly St. in the College Hill neighborhood of Eugene, Oregon. The best cider in the Pacific Northwest AND Cap'n Slappy! What could be better? ** Also on Tap for the Holiday! ? The online comic strip Savage Chickens will focus on pirates every day leading up to Wednesday's holiday. Check them out here: http://www.savagechickens.com/2018/09/the-legend-of-blackbeard.html ? Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers are planning a facebook live show at https://www.facebook.com/TomMasonandTheBlueBuccaneers/. They'll be featuring music from their new CD, "If You Want to be a Pirate: Songs for Young Buccaneers." It's a fun collection of new and "repurposed" songs from the Blue Buccaneer oeuvre. Whether you're a wee scallywag or an old salt, you'll enjoy this one. Besides being one of the most fun-lovin' filibuster crews at sea, they're also a collection of pros from the Nashville music scene, so they've got both the musicianship AND the pirattitude! Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers also will celebrate the holiday the following weekend at the Pilgrimage Music Festival Saturday in Franklin, Tennessee. It's a two-day festival you don't want to miss if you're anywhere close. ? Speaking of music for wee buccaneers, Sean's Music Factory has released a video of "A Pirate's Expression," which illustrates for kids some common expressions and their nautical roots, and pays homage to Talk Like a Pirate Day. You can see it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VemLcQ2mmkw ** There's plenty more to fill you in on in the lead up to the holiday! Keep your eyes on the horizon! I was right about Cap'n Slappy marking Talk Like a Pirate Day at Ciderlicious in Eugene. BUT I GAVE THE WRONG ADDRESS!!! The party will not be at the original location. It's the grand opening party for their new space at 675 River Road in Eugene. The party begins at 6 p.m. and will run until 9. So if you're going to go out for Talk Like a Pirate Day and want to meet up with Slappy (and I highly recommend it) see him on River Road, not the address I gave Sunday. To atone for my mistake, allow me to offer a couple of video links to get you in the mood for the holiday. Cap'n Bogg and Salty ? The one-time band was a Pacific Northwest favorite. Since Talk Like a Pirate Day falls on a Wednesday, this year, a school day, this video seems like a natural. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdSkDXs00xg Tom Mason ? The captain of the Blue Buccaneers offers a lesson on how to Talk Like a Pirate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jipxpr0U4zg&t=38s The Pirate Guys ? Way back when we were a couple of baby-faced buccaneers, Cap'n Slappy and Ol' Chumbucket broke down the basics of pirate talk into "The 5 As." This was one of the first videos we ever shot, back in the days before we had editing software (or any idea how to use it.) We were "one-take wonders," we sketched out what we're going to do and shot it in a single take. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cKCkbWDGwE&t=45s That's all for now. Issue No. 148 ? www.talklikeapirate.com ? www.facebook.com/InternationalTalkLikeAPirateDay ? www. baurlife.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------- Ahoy mates! Today is the day! INTERNATIONAL TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY! It's easy! It's fun! It's inappropirate in so many settings! (That was actually a typo, but when I looked at it, I liked "inappropirate" better than inappropriate. Someone call the folks at Websters!) All you have to do to be part of the crew is ? like the name says ? Talk Like a PIrate today! So "Ahoy" instead of hello. "Aye" when you're agreeing with someone. "Avast!" when you want attention. Shout "Prepare to be boarded!" when ? well, I'll leave it to you to decide when it's time to shout "Prepare to be boarded!" And sprinkle your conversation with "Aaarrrs!" When all else fails, just throw "me hearty" at the end of every sentence! "Fill it with regular, me hearty!" "The dog ate my homework - me hearty!" "I'd like a large pepperoni pizza with extra cheese ? me hearty!" "Turn your head and cough - me hearty!" THose two simple words, when uttered with the proper pirate panache, turns any comment or conversation into pirate talk! Also, remember that barbecued pork ribs are the official food of International Talk Like a Pirate Day for sound historical reasons that I won't bother you with for now. They're delicious! What more reason do you need? Have yerself a pigsicle today! Thank you all for joining us today, for letting your inner buccaneer come out and play!
