This is a big year for us ? this year, Sept. 19 marks the 20th anniversary of International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Pulitzer Prize winning author and humorist Dave Barry wrote about our holiday in his syndicated column on Sept. 8, 2002, and it took off, going 'round the world faster than Francis Drake. In the two decades that followed, people have often asked us, "How long are you going to do this?" And our answer is always the same. "As long as it's fun." And now, going on 20 years down the road, it's still fun. So we're hoping to do something special this year to recognize the milestone. Something we hope includes people all around the globe. We'll let you know as plans come together. Start thinking about how YOU would celebrate something as big as the 20th anniversary of International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and pass your ideas on to me here! ------------------ ** Big Doings in St. Augustine St. Augustine, Florida, is a great town, especially if you're a pirate. And at the end of the month ? Feb. 25, 26, 27 ? the town will be crawling with corsairs, flooded with filibusters and jumping with gentlemen rovers as the Order of Leviathan, the league of elite members of the pirate community, gathers there to induct 26 new members. There will be a host of activities, some open only to members of the order and others open to the public. Visitors will get a chance to meet the pirate elite, fire blackpowder firearms and tour the St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum. You can read all about it at the Order of Leviathan website (https://orderofleviathan.com) or the event page on Facebook (https://tinyurl.com/2p8hsmak). Leviathan or not, if you haven't yet been to the Pirate Museum you owe it to yourself to get down to St. Augustine and give it a look! It's an amazing trove of pirate ephemera! And that's not all the town has to offer. There's the Fountain of Youth site, the foot-friendly downtown and so much more. ------------------ ** Pirates Invade HBO The first time I ever heard of Stede Bonnett he was described by our friend, marauder maven Jamaica Rose, as "the worst pirate ever." The more you find out about him, the more improbable his story gets. "Stupidest pirate" seems more apt. Now that ridiculous figure is the inspiration for a new comedy series on HBO. "Our Flag Means Death" is loosely based on the story of the prosperous gentleman from Barbados who gave it all up to become a pirate. He bought a ship ? which is simply not the done thing, you capture your pirate ship ? and hired a crew to go on the account. Less than three years later he was dead, swinging from the end of a rope for piracy. Rhys Darby plays Bonnett as a foppish fool, and Oscar-winner Taika Waititi is Blackbeard. Bonnett's meeting with Blackbeard was the beginning of his end, as it was for so many others. Anyway, check out the trailer (https://tinyurl.com/k5bkb63j). ------------------ ** An Opportunity for Tennessee Pirates Pirates are wanted! And we're not talking about the way the Spanish navy wanted pirates ? to hang 'em from the yardarm. No! Freebooters in eastern Tennessee have a chance to live the adventure when the Sixth Annual Tennessee Pirate Fest takes place the last two weekends of May. Auditions for local street characters will be held by scheduled video appointment from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, or by arrangement. The organizers say they're looking for friendly adults with theatrical and hospitality experience. Mature and talented teens will be considered if they have transportation or will be accompanied by a participating adult. The audition will consist of speaking in a British, French, and/or "pirate accent," singing a short song and reading from scripts posted on the website. Wearing a costume to audition is optional. Being cast as a street character is primarily a learning and performance opportunity, but some other consideration might be available. Those who want to apply can visit the website (https://tmfaire.com/auditions/). ------------------ ** Lend Me Your Ears Finally, give a listen! This is 2Cellos, the Croatian cello duo, pounding out a soul-stirring rendition of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme. If this doesn't get your heart pumping, you just might be dead, mate.
