No, not the start of the school year! It's almost time for International Talk Like a Pirate Day, which has been celebrated around the world every years since 2002. Remember, the Pirate Code holds each crew member responsible for maintaining his cutlass (rust free, sharp edge) and flintlock pistol in good working order. In terms of the holiday, that means honing your filibuster vocabulary to a razor's edge. In the next month we'll be sending out short vocabulary reminders and hints on how to use them. We'll begin with the easiest one. Ahoy! It's a friendly word, and how many of those does a pirate utter? "Ahoy" mean hello! That's a good place to start. On Sept, 19, at work or a tavern or at sea or around the dinner table at home, you don't greet people with a simpering, "Hello." Growl out a mighty "Ahoy!" Ahoy is also the first of what we call "The Five As." We call them that because there are five of them and they all start with A. You can view a video of us explicating them here: https://tinyurl.com/bdfb6bwt. That was our very first TLAPDay video, 17 years ago. Looking at it I thought, "God! Were we ever that young?" If you're not inclined (or allowed, in work/school situations) to dress in full pirate regalia on the day, it's not too late to get the latest in piratey T-shirt wear from our online store at https://www.cafepress.com/talklikeapirate. You've got the buckles! Prepare to swash them! Yours piratically, Ol' Chumbucket Aug. 19, 2023 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Issue No. 173 Edited by Ol' Chumbucket 20 DAYS UNTIL INTERNATIONAL TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY In this issue: ?? Today's Nautical Jargon ?? Talk Like a Pirate Day is Always Sept. 19 ?? TLAPDay Video ?? Today's Nautical Jargon for Talk Like a Pirate Day With Tropical Storm Idalia closing in on Florida this week, I've chosen "Batten the Hatches" as today's Nautical Jargon in preparation for Talk Like a Pirate Day. A batten is a strip of wood, or today it could be metal or plastic, which is used to fasten a canvas or other covering over the hatch or doorway on a ship. The canvas or other cover is stretched over the hatchway and the batten is secured over the hatchway's raised border, called a coaming, to keep water out of the below deck areas of the ship during foul weather. In terms of Talk Like a Pirate Day, use it to mean "Prepare for trouble," as in "Here comes the boss," or "Cheese it, the cops!" For our family and friends who lie in Idalia's path, I mean it in the most simple and straightforward way possible. Take care. Make sure everything outside is secure, and be careful. Good luck, mates! ?? Talk Like a Pirate Day is Always Sept. 19. Talk Like a Pirate Day is celebrated every Sept. 19. Doesn't matter the year. Doesn't matter what day of the week it falls on. Sept. 19 is Talk Like a Pirate Day. If you're not familiar with the history of the holiday, or how we came up with that date, you can find it on our website at http://talklikeapirate.com/wordpress/sample-page/ "But we want to have a pirate party on Friday or Saturday night," you say. "This year Sept. 19 is a Tuesday. Why don't we have Talk Like a Pirate Day on the weekend to we can have a big party." To which we reply, go ahead. As a matter of fact, Mad Sally and I are going to a big Talk Like a Pirate Day Party on the 16th. Let me ask you a question. Do you go to Christmas parties on Christmas day? Probably not. You celebrate Christmas on Dec. 25 with a series of traditional activities. But you go to a lot of parties in the weeks beforehand, don't you? It's like that. A lot of the fun of Talk Like a Pirate Day is the joyful anarchy of prattling like a pirate and bellowing like a buccaneer in completely inappropriate places ? work, school, church, the supermarket or ? yes, I'll say it ? the bedroom (more about that another time.) Check out this video we made 17 years ago (back before we had video editing software so everything was one take.) I think it makes my point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGECIFa9rJM So by all means party like a pirate on the weekend before and/or after the holiday. Then go out on Sept. 19 and let the world hear you unleash your inner pirate! It's once a year, and it's a ton of freebooter fun. ?? TLAPDay Video Once upon a time we had a feature on the website called "Ask Cap'n Slappy," sort of like Dear Abby, if Abby were a dangerous, drunken pirate, and I've never heard any suggestion that she was. People would send their questions ? whether piratical, personal, or whimsical ? and Cap'n Slappy would answer them. Sad to say, the feature has been gone from the site for many a year now, but there's still this video from back in the day, when he answered a correspondent's question about spelling. It's a fun one, and you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrT8OQ5Jq-o&t=10s ?? In the next issue, we'll offer some tips om dressing like a pirate, and have some more salty tomfoolery for your pleasure. Until then, I remain ...
