Issue No. 183 Edited by Ol' Chumbucket --------------------------------------------------- Eleven Months Until Talk Like a Pirate Day! There's Still Piratin' A'plenty To Do It's been a month since we celebrated International Talk Like a Pirate Day for the 21st time, and here we are, launched on another trip 'round the sun that in 11 more months will bring us back around to the freebooters' favorite festivity. But just because this year's celebration of pirate palaver is in the rear-view mirror, that doesn't mean the buccaneer world has shut down. Far from it. The calendar is crowded with events and activities that will put a spring in the step of a peg-legged pirate and a smile on the face of freebooters young and old. Just last weekend our friends in the southeast part of the U.S. enjoyed another Tybee Island Pirate Festival, one of the most popular pirate events of the fall. I first heard of Tybee while attending the first Pyrate Con in New Orleans, and people were talking about a new event that had been a lot of fun the previous autumn. It has grown into one of the classics, and my regret is that I could never make my calendar work so that I could attend. By reputation, it is one fine festival. And that's just the start, from coast to coast, and around the world, there are enough events to keep any gentleman rover (of either sex) busy all year long, starting this weekend with the Space Coast Festival in Florida (the Sunshine State has a lot of events in the fall and winter, being as it's ? ya know ? the Sunshine State.) The following week, Blackbeard's Pirate Jamboree on Okracoke Island, North Carolina takes place from Oct. 27-28. This one features members of the Loose Cannon Company, as fine a crew of miscreants and adventurers as you're likely to find anywhere. There also will be events in the United Kingdom, the Cayman Islands, one in France and a couple in Ireland. Another big on is the Cedar Key, Florida, Pirate Invasion. It's a big festival in a small town on Florida's Gulf Coast, and one of my favorites I've never been to. Great time with truly wonderful people. That'll be Nov. 3-5, and if you're anywhere within striking distance, you owe it to yourself to drive over, sail over, fly over or parachute in. I've got plenty of pirate plans myself , but nothing in the next couple of months while I take care of other business (including the book I'm working on and another I am planning,) and Cap'n Slappy continues his quest to create the perfect Tiki bar. My pirate perambulations resume after the new year, and I'll let you know more about them as the time draws nearer and our plans firm up. If you know of a pirate event that I didn't mention (quite likely, I would say) don't get mad at me! We only know the ones people tell us about, or that we hear through the island telegraph. All you have to do is send me a message in an e-bottle and I'm on it! Until next time, thanks for helping to spread the word ? And the word is "Aarrr!"
