How to Dress Like a Pirate, on the Cheap ?? A Note About the Questions ?? Today's Nautical Jargon for Talk Like a Pirate Day: Splice the Mainbrace Splice the Mainbrace is Cap'n Slappy's very favorite nautical phrase. It means to have the first drink of the day. "Time to splice the mainbrace," you might (and should) say to your friends whole preparing to open a bottle or two. (Please note: This advice is for adults only. Kids, you who are under legal drinking age, PAY NO ATTENTION to the pirate tapping away on his keyboard. Remember, as we often remind people, the holiday is TALK Like a Pirate Day, no "Get In Trouble with the Law Like a Pirate Day. Everybody got that?) The mainbrace is the longest, heaviest and most import line in the rigging a sailing ship of the day, vital to both steering and securing the mast. When it became frayed, broken or shot up, you couldn't just tie it back together with a square not because the line had to run through blocks. Splicing the mainbrace was a difficult, time consuming and often dangerous job. (Pirates almost always shot at the rigging of their opponent's ship in hopes of making their prey unsteerable, or bringing down a mast. After all, they wanted to rob the ship, not sink it before they could pillage it, so there was relatively cannons smashing at the hull at close range. It was a simple business decision.) After the arduous task of splicing the mainbrace, the captain would reward the sailors who had done it with an extra ration of rum. Eventually, the phrase spread from the work to the reward, and "splice the mainbrace" is now the command to break out the rum. Let me finish by offering a link to a video of an old salt, master shipwright Louis Sauzedde, talk about how the phrase took on its current meaning. It's a good yard told by an old tar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBPslTgbgns ?? TLAPDay Video? Today's TLAPDay Jargon: Things to Call a Pirate Besides 'Pirate' What are some other words pirates might apply to themselves, what are some seadog circumlocutions, as it were? * Gentleman rover. Pirates weren't typically members of the upper class, and there was no such thing as "social mobility" in those days. Once a commoner, always a commoner. So calling themselves "gentlemen" was one way of thumbing their noses at society. And rove is something pirates do. * Filibuster and freebooter are both terms for pirate, and come from the same root, the Spanish filibustero , which means plunderer. The Spanish word itself comes from vrijbuiter, the Dutch word for pirate. * Corsair is a word for a sea-going raider, and is used more in connection with the Moorish marauders, the Barbary pirates, than to describe the classic Golden Age Pirates of the Caribbean. Chief among the Corsairs was Barbarossa (not Barbossa, like in the PotC movies, but Barbarossa, which means red beard.) The terror of the Mediterranean, Barbarossa was actually two men, Greek-borh Turkish brothers. The elder, Arouj, was the original Barbarossa, who came to prominence by capturing two treasure galleys belonging to the pope. He worked his way up to becoming the ruler of Algiers, but died in battle with the Spanish. His younger brother, Khidr, took over the family business (which was being Barbarossa .) He swore allegiance to the sultan of Turkey, who rewarded bim by making him governor of Algiers. That gave him undisputedcontrol of the western Mediterranean. Anyway, I seem to have strayed away from the original point, which was to come up with some synonyms for pirate. So let's end with one the classic ? Buccaneer. But you know what? I've already gone on too long, so we'll leave Buccaneer for tomorrow. ?? TLAPDay Video? A Proud Pirate and Official TLAPDay Dinner * TLAPDay Video? "Pirates vs. Ninjas" ?? Today's Pirate Talk: Buccaneer ? A Proud Pirate and Official TLAPDay Dinner Buccaneer is a term applied specifically to the pirate of the Caribbean, from the early 17th century through the mid 18th, the end of the Golden Age of Pirates. Here's why. The word comes from the French word boucanier, which means "hunter of wild pork," and is based on a specific way of cooking the wild pork and cattle found in the islands. The Spanish thought the New World belonged to them. Yes, we know there were people living there already, the indigenous natives. Complain to the Spanish, not us. The Spanish were not happy with interlopers from other European nations, and dealt with them ruthlessly. Small groups if French, English and Dutch settlers lived in isolated settlements, subsisting on the wild pigs and cattle on the islands. They were adept at catching them and killing them with knives, rarely having to shoot them. The meat was laid over a lathe of green wood, called a barbecu (from which we get the word barbecue) and was cured by the heat and smoke, not unlike beef jerky. It was called boucan . The Spanish decided they had to eliminate what they considered a threat to their Caribbean colonies and tried killing off the wild pigs that provided the boucaniers's food source. When that didn't work they turned to just killing the boucaniers themselves. As you can imagine, this made them easy recruits for the English hoping to displace the Spanish. The boucaniers ? now buccaneers ? found a more profitable lifestyle on the open sea, preying on Spanish treasure ships than they ever had hunting pigs. So that's where we get the proud title, buccaneer. It's also why Cap'n Slappy and I declared barbecued pork ribs to be the official dinner of International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Because of the historical connection, and because they're so damn delicious. ?? TLAPDay Video? Pirates vs. Ninjas This is one of our more popular videos. We don't know why there's this whole "Pirates vs. Ninjas" thing alive on the web, it was there before we started. Frankly, we think both sides should come together to face our common foes ? the clowns. But in this video we prove ? scientifically! ? that pirates are superior. (And yes, we know Bruce Lee wasn't a ninja. We were just trying to give the poor ninjas ? something ? to smile about. So don't bother writing to us. Today's Pirate Talk: Bung Hole, and Monkey Pump * It was 16, maybe 17 years ago when I made a TV anchor woman do a spit take. I was a guest on a Eugene TV station's midday news show, in my full pirate regalia (which caused some trouble because my rum tot kept clanking against the mike they'd stuck on me) and the anchorwoman (I can see her now, but can't remember her name) asked for some examples of how you might use pirate talk in everyday, 21st century conversation. I said, "Well, at a tavern, for instance, you might ask the attractive bar maid, 'Excuse me, but can I put me monkey pump in your bunghole?" This is when the anchor woman, who made the mistake of taking a sip of water while I answered her question, shot it in an epic spit take. There also was, as you might guess, some consternation from other people on the set. I reassured them. "The cork or stopper of a barrel is called the bung, and the hole in the side of the barrel that it seals is called the bung hole. Now, clever sailors sometimes slipped a thin straw or reed between the staves of a barrel or perhaps around the bung to sneak a drink. So all I did was suggest you ask the barmaid for a drink." By all means, use this when you're out carousing on Talk Like a Pirate Day. * TLAPDay Video? "The First Annual TLAPDay Drunken Sailor Sing Along A-Go-Go" This is one of the most clever ideas I've ever had, if I do say so myself. I contacted a swarm of pirate friends and asked them to sing a few lines of the classic, "What Do You Do with a Drunken Sailor," and they all did it! Nobody backed out. It's been 12 years. Maybe it's time to do something like it again next year. Anyway, right now enjoy this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJUo5MDDmA8 Until then, thanks for spreading the word ... and the word is "Aarrr!" Today's Pirate Talk ? "Prepare to be Boarded!" "Prepare to be boarded!" is my very favorite pirate phrase, because it can be used so flexibly in so many different ways ? many of them naughty. When pirates were approaching a ship they intended to capture and loot, the would warn the other ship of their intent, to cow them into submission. "Prepare to be boarded!" they would shout. Then the captain would order, "Boarders away!" and they would swing over from the yard arm or leap across the railing to the deck of the opposing ship. When making the rounds with your pirate brethren, you might do the same. Gather your mates by the entrance and call out, "Boarders Away!" As you enter, issue the warning, "Prepare to be boarded." But there's so many other ways the phrase works. For instance, a friend of mine was planning a Sept. 18 wedding. I reminded her that by the time the reception was over and she and her husband made it to bed, it would probably by the 19th, Talk Like a Pirate Day, and she could use the phrase to good advantage, growling "Prepare to be boarded" in lieu of cooing sweet nothings. She told me later that she told him my suggestion and it was the first time she'd ever seen him blush. He was bright red. ?? TLAPDay Video: Wooing Wenches. Pirate Talk: Scut and Scut Work With Sept. 19 falling this year on a Tuesday, it's a safe bet that you'll be at work or school for Talk Like a Pirate Day. Don't let that stop you from exercising your right to pirate. Does your boss load you with a lot of menial tasks? Is your prof handing out a pop quiz to "see who's done the reading?" Here's the pirate phrase to express your feelings. A scut is a small crack or chink in the deck of a wooden sailing ship of the day. And scut work is any tedious, usually maddeningly detailed work that gets laid on the crew, like scraping the hull or polishing the brass. Today that could run the gamut of doing the inventory at a hardware store or mopping the men's room at a fast food joint, to almost any household task you could name ? dishes, laundry, bathing the kids. You name it. On Sept. 19th, it's all scut work. ?? It started as a joke shared by a handful of friends. It's so much more now ? because of all the people who saw something they liked in the idea and made it their own. There's no way to quantify it, no objective criteria to judge it by, but to me it sure felt like there was more energy, more fun, more action than in recent years. On social media, virtually every post and comment I saw was pirate related. And the interviews I did this year, while not as many as in the past (and a good thing too, since I don't know if I'm strong enough these days to do 80 radio interviews over the phone in the course of 28 hours, which used to be routine) were interesting and fun and went on for a bit so that we could really get into the topic and shoot the breeze. So anyway, thanks for making this holiday season a good one. Today is whatever the pirate equivalent of Boxing Day is (in England, Boxing Day is what they call the day after Christmas.) That means, among other things, that I'll fade away from your inbox for a while. But not completely. My plan is send you ? all 4,125 of you ? one issue of The Poopdeck a month until things start heating up next summer. And to keep me mindful, I'm going to be sending it each month on the 19th. See what I did there? There's always something popping up in the pirate community and you want to know about it. In fact, there something big slated for this weekend! The Beaufort (NC) Pirate Invasion takes place Sept. 22-24 and if you're anywhere near North Carolina you want to check it out. The Loose Cannon Company, a great pirate crew, will be on hand as the festival re-enacts the 1724 Spanish assault on the town, as well as pays tribute to Blackbeard and other pirate legends. So thank you, one and all, for helping make this year's Talk Like a Pirate Day so lively. And stay tuned for more pirate action throughout the year. So in the meantime, keep spreading the world.
