Issue No. 188 Edited by Ol' Chumbucket ------------------------------- SIX MONTHS UNTIL INTERNATIONAL TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY! In this issue: ** Stop Me If You've Heard This One! ** This Month's Pirate Phrase ** Coming to a Festival Near You ? PIRATES! ** Looking Forward to Seeing You in Long Beach ------------------------------- ** Stop Me If You've Heard This One! We assume you probably have heard these before, since people have sending us the same pirate jokes over and over for 20 years. You think we've never heard the paper towel joke? Guess again! But we're happy to share, so between now and this year's Talk Like a Pirate Day we'll post at least one of these a month. If you think you know one that we haven't heard yet, we think you're probably mistaken, but send it along to chumbucket at talklikeapirate.com. If you truly have a new one, we will be happy to acknowledge you. (Note: As far as we're concerned, all the jokes that focus on the word "Aarrr" are the same joke and will be treated as such.) So let's start with ... The paper towel joke! -------------------- Pirate walks into a bar. The bartender notices instead of a scarf under his hat, the pirate seems to have a paper towel sticking out from under his tricorn. Bartender: Excuse me, what's with the paper towel? PirateP: Aarrr! I've got a Bounty on me head! -------------------- And now, one of my favorite riddles. What has eight eyes, eight legs, and eight hands? Eight pirates! ------------------------------- ** This month's pirate phrase Each issue between now and the holiday we'll be supplying a word or phrase to spice up your pirate palaver. We'll try to get away from the same old same old. The phrase for March is ? Take a caulk. To keep the ship watertight, the spaces between the deck planks were crammed with a mixture of tar or putty, and hemp fibers from rope. This mixture was called caulk, and caulking the deck was a long, arduous but necessary task. Just like today's tourists aboard a luxury cruise liner, the weary pirate might want to lay out on the deck in the sun if he wasn't on watch. But the sun would soften the caulk, and after lying on the deck for a while, the sailor might rise to discover lines of caulking across his back, or running down his pants. He "took the caulk." Meaning ? To rest on deck. How to use it ? At work, to your co-worker. "If the boss asks where I am, tell him I'm running errands. I'm going out back to take a caulk." In her "other life," Ol' Chumbucket's wife, Mad Sally is a teacher, and especially in the morning, has to deal with students taking a caulk. ------------------------------- ** Coming to a festival near you ? PIRATES! There's a flotilla of fun and festivities for freebooters coming up! You can get a glimpse of the action by checking out the links page on our web site ? www.talklikeapirate.com http://talklikeapirate.com/wordpress/pirate-links/) I've spent the last week updating and generally freshening up those festival links. Some of them are worth driving across the country for. Trust me on that. Mark you, we don't pretend that our list is anything like exhaustive. These are events we've heard about, or that people have sent us information on. Please, if you know of a pirate festival that we don't have listed here or on our links page, bring it to our attention and I'll get that posted. Here's a smattering of events taking place in the next month that you might enjoy. Details are on the links page. ? Pirate Fest Las Vegas ? March 25-26, Craig Ranch Regional Park in North Las Vegas. There's plenty of activity all summer that'll warm the cockles of your corsair couer. Including one coming up at the end of June that's near and dear to our hearts. That one is ... ????????????????? ** Pirate Invasion Long Beach The biggest pirate event on the West Coast ? one of the biggest in the country ? is the Pirate Invasion Long Beach. And we hope to see you there! Mad Sally, Cap'n Slappy, and myself ? Ol' Chumbucket ? have been invited to take part in the festivities. Sally and I couldn't be more excited to reconnect with our old friends and make a bunch of new ones. There are scores of pirates I consider good friends who I haven't shared a tankard with in 20 years or more, and many I've actually never met in person! I look forward to sharing a manly hug with them (although please remember, my chest is still knitting itself back together after surgery last fall, so not TOO manly.) This event also will be the site of the induction ceremony for the pirate honor society, the Order of Leviathan, drawing some of the top filibusters from coast to coast and across the pond to share in the festivities. There will be a pirate encampment and demonstration of the pirate life, music from traditional to punk rock, vendors, and other entertainment including juggling, comedy and children's theater. All the stuff that makes a pirate festival so fun. Information about tickets, schedules, parking and everything else is available at the festival website, [ https://orderofleviathan.com/ | https://orderofleviathan.com ] . ????????????????? That's probably more than enough for now. We hope to hear from you with fresh jokes and news of upcoming events.
