Subject: Student Competition, Grades 9-12

I’m writing to tell you about Imagine Tomorrow, a problem-solving competition for 9-12 graders hosted at Washington State University in Pullman in the hopes that you and your students will participate and/or that you will help to spread the word to other educators you might know.
Now in its fifth year, Imagine Tomorrow this year is inviting students from Oregon, Idaho, and Montana to join Washington state students in developing creative, carefully researched solutions to society’s grand challenges. Unlike any other school competition, Imagine Tomorrow breaks down barriers to personal advancement, fosters inclusion and collaboration, and strengthens our students, schools, industries, and communities.
The competition welcomes 9-12 grade students, and in the past has attracted students with interests in the full range of subject areas, equal numbers of boys and girls, and students of diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic levels. It removes financial barriers to participation (there is no registration fee and housing and meals are provided at no cost), so that schools can compete successfully regardless of economic circumstances. It places contestants on a level playing field that rewards creative ideas and sound research. Required to work in teams, students emerge with a new understanding of the importance of collaboration. Imagine Tomorrow motivates many students to attend college. It marks some students’ first visit to the campus of a major research university.
Thanks to the generosity of competition sponsors, Imagine Tomorrow delivers more than $100,000 in cash awards. Awards honor student competitors and their schools, empowering educators to advance academic programs. Many of the awards are earmarked for students from newly-participating schools.
2011 Topic: Ideas fuel the future.
As the world transitions to alternate energy sources, people have to make fundamental changes in the way they operate. In this high school problem-solving competition, the students’ task is to explore ways to enable some aspect of this transition. What types of behavior changes will be necessary, and how do we bring those about? How will suburbs, towns, and cities need to be redesigned? What types of inventions or redesigns will be needed to take full advantage of the new energy sources?
Challenges
Imagine Tomorrow lets students choose among four challenges (biofuels, design, technology, behavior) and address the challenge by developing creative, well-researched solutions.
Registration opens March 1 and closes April 2. Register early – space is limited.
