[Osta-board] Election ethics?

I completely agree! I think my first communication with Lori, responding to some outreach, was to express my frustration with the lack of administration support for science and my fear that science would be swept even farther under the rug with CCSS. I see NGSS being given lip-service by admin, with no support. We need a strong voice to break through the administration rhetoric (how many of you have heard the admin mantra "if the students can read better they will be more successful in science" used to justify their anti-science decisions?). I recently was asked if I was burned out. I don't think I am burned out, but I am frustrated to the point of catatonic response and tired of being threatened by admin for trying to teach real science. We need a leader from NSTA who can and will stand up for science education. Having a Washington administrator represent the interests of science educators isn't going to be effective in my district. While I definitely would prefer Lynda or Lori as representative, even if the representative comes from Washington, I want someone elected to NSTA who represents the interests of science education. We need to consider how, given the small window for introducing candidates, we can best present our candidates to the NSTA region.

And why is there such a difference between Oregon and Washington in membership in NSTA?

The board really needs to consider some "strategic planning" to get an Oregonian elected to the position of NSTA Region XVII Director. In the recent past elections, the candidates from Oregon have been overwhelmed by the Washington candidates mainly because of the sheer numbers of members in Washington! In the last election, an ambitious TOSA from Bellingham, completely unknown by the leadership of WSTA, won despite the assurances from WSTA board colleagues that it was "Oregon's turn" to have a representative.
> Although he is a nice fellow, he became a school principal just after his NSTA election, and his school responsibilities prevented him from any involvement with OSTA. He completely snubbed Lori's Centennial Conference despite the fact that a former Bellingham science teaching colleague volunteered to bring the NSTA display to our conference. Lori had Bill Badders here, for heaven's sake, and her conference was completely built around NSTA's NGSS strands.
> The same thing is happening this year at Sue's Bend Conference. Sue is bringing in NSTA speakers and her strands are based on NSTA themes of NGSS for Oregon, yet not a peep from the current Region XVII Director.

But with both Lynda and Lori planning to run for that position, some "strategic planning" is needed by the board to help promote their candidacies and insure the election of a person who will represent the interests of all of the NSTA members and their state organizations in Region XVII.
